Law of Attraction vs. Subconscious Mind

Back when no one would have imagined it, the internet was not the open library full of all kinds of information as it is today. The time I am referring to is not even such a long time ago. Fifteen years ago, the only way to learn new things was by reading books. So I read a lot of them, different kinds of books. In my late twenties, the book “The Secret” was published in Italy. It was a big deal! Many people were talking about it and people were extremely curious about it. It looked like it could change your life.

I was so excited and didn’t waste a second! The day it came out, I went straight to a bookstore and bought it. I was so thirsty for knowledge that I read it all in just a few days. I inhaled a new breath of positive energy and my entire body couldn’t have been more thrilled about it. Finally, I was able to achieve whatever I wanted in life. In the book, it was explained very well how to use the law of attraction properly.

Yes, because the secret kept in the book was about the law of attraction. As you may have read in my articles, dear reader, you know I’ve often written about a number of different Laws which preside over the universe’s dynamics. These Laws have material and yet spiritual implications. At the time, I didn’t know a lot about it but I was definitely fascinated by the concept that quantum physics could explain God. While reading, I was impressed by the use of the word “frequency” – a very important word that I got to understand deeply only many years after. Also, the concept of thought was well-represented. Bob Doyle, a contributor to the book, says:

Basically put, the law of attraction says that like attracts like. But we’re really talking at a level of thought.

I was ready. I had the book and everything was well described in it, so I started my training. I wrote my cheque to the bank of the Universe with my wish clearly written on it. I put all my intention while I was doing it. I felt as if I had already achieved my goal. I visualised myself having what I always wanted, experiencing my happiness and my joy. Every day I tried to find some space to feed my vision with the right feelings. One week passed. One month passed. Six months were already gone and nothing had happened so I started questioning myself. What went wrong?

At that time I could not know the reason why it did not work but, after many years, I can honestly say that the answer is now clear in my mind. Part of the issue is explained in the book itself, in fact, John Assaraf – another contributor – says: “Here’s the problem, most people are thinking about what they don’t want, and they are wondering why it shows over and over again.”

In another book entitled “Evolve your brain: the science of changing your mind”, the author, Dr. Joe Dispensa explains this concept very clearly with a simple but yet extraordinary example. He basically says that if someone tells you not to think of a pink elephant, your brain instantly creates the image of a pink elephant. In the book, Dr. Dispensa gives a great vision full of scientific data regarding the phenomenal potential of the mind. Spiritually speaking, I can explain it to you saying that the Universe does not think in the negative. Which means, for example, that if I decide to quit drinking and I start repeating to myself that “I do not want to drink alcohol”, the Universe reads the message without the word “not”, changing it in “I want to drink alcohol”!

The author Rhonda Byrne also explains the concept:

The only reason why people do not have what they want is because they are thinking more about what they don’t want than what they do want. Listen to your thoughts, and listen to the words you are saying. The law is absolute and there are no mistakes.

Here is the mistake! The only reason why people do not have what they want is that they think more about what they do not want. This can be a contributory cause but for sure not the main reason. The explanation is contained in the brain itself. Dr. Bruce Lipton, a cell biologist, in his book “The biology of belief” explains brilliantly how the subconscious mind is the real reason behind the problem. To put it simply, Dr. Lipton describes the mind as if it were divided into two very different parts. The conscious mind is the mind that lives in the present moment. It is activated by every thought that I consciously direct to something I want to understand and to learn. It is a very elastic mind. The subconscious mind is the so-called methodical mind, in other words, it is the mind structured following repeated and incessant thoughts because the repetition creates the habit.

Dr. Lipton has evaluated the daily work of the conscious mind at around 5% while the remaining 95% is all about the subconscious one!!! Some researchers say that the average person has about 60,000 thoughts a day, other researchers increase this number to 80,000. Do you now realise how many unconscious thoughts you have every single day?

I personally think that the reason why the law of attraction does not work for most of us is contained in these numbers. The subconscious mind is the part of us that always rows against us.

This is the mind that, when I want to change my job because the manager is abusive, the salary is low and I am constantly unhappy about it, at the moment I try to make a step, it comes out saying: “You are not good enough to find another job”, “You have changed so many jobs because you are not a good worker”, “Nobody will employ you, you are not qualified enough”! This voice speaks about your past when your father used to say that you were undisciplined, your teacher said that you were lazy, etc. It contains our insecurities and amplifies them when we try to change.

The weight that the subconscious mind constantly exerts over us is the reason why it is difficult to apply the law of attraction.
